Among Quantcast’s top 5,000 websites, we looked at data Facebook makes available about comments via their API, shares and likes by URL. What we found was interesting – and we decided to generate a list of lists for everyone based on this data. Note one limitation is that not all subdomains (except www. which is) are counted so the results may be skewed for sites with subdomains that receive a lot of traffic.

One of the most stunning findings, however, was that fully 85% of the top 5,000 URLs appeared to have or have had Facebook comments enabled on their URLs. That number was stunning – over 4,200 of 5,000 sites!

First, is a list of sites ordered by comment rate – namely the number of comments divided by the site’s monthly unique visitor count.

Quite a few popular social-driven sites like damnyouautocorrect.com with content that people love to talk about. Next, the sites with largest number of on-site likes – here causes.com leads with pretty much all their fans being driven to their website (their Facebook app shows up as their website if initiated from within Facebook), with some others like reverbnation.com showing up well. Bandoo.com overindexes because it is a downloadable application allowing you to add emoticons to emails etc., and thus it appears that Quantcast counts its traffic at a fairly low rate but it has a large number of likes and shares initiated from its domain. Looking at the data this was a very surprising discovery for us:

The third category of ranking is based on the raw number of shares done by each domain. Here a couple of familiar and not-too-familiar names show up like youtube.com, hotmail.com, socialbox.com and picnik.com -

But looking at it differently, based on the share rate (comparing the number of shares to the amount of monthly traffic the site receives) and then expanding our list to look at over 100 sites we can pick out a few very cool sites that may only recently have risen to prominence like occupywallst.org or evergreens like textsfromlastnight.com – here they are in order with their Quantcast traffic rank in parentheses:
